For 30 odd years I have been an employee in this secular world. There were many up and downs along the journey. One of the main issue is human relationships be it your peers or your superiors. The bosses I worked with in the past determined my annual increment, promotion or to leave me in cold storage.
In this secular world, despite how hardworking you are, your rewards may not equate to the efforts you put in and this can be depressing at times. The situation became more challenging now with the ongoing pandemic which have affected people from all walks of life globally. Most employers expected us to be flexible, agile and also to make sacrifices. And most of us including myself have been impacted physically, financially, mentally and spiritually during these 15 months of lockdown period.
Last year I came across a scripture verse which made a profound impact in my working life. It is from Colossians 3:23-24. (NJB) that reads “Whatever your work is, put your heart into it as done for the Lord and not for human beings, knowing that the Lord will repay you making you as his heirs, it is Christ the Lord you are serving” . This is a verse from the letter of St Paul to the Church at Colossae.
After some reflections on this particular verse, my perspective pertaining to my work and superiors changed. This verse made me realise that my real boss is God. When I began to apply it in my working life, my daily tasks at work became more meaningful and I became more patient and considerate in dealing with people. I work for God and not the mere humans in this secular world and I shouldn’t be affected by them emotionally. In this verse, God has constantly reminded me that I am working for his glory and it is Christ the Lord I am serving. If I want to be faithful to God, I have to be faithful to my work as well.
This verse has become my prayer for the start of day at work daily and I leave it to God’s guidance and help during this unprecedented time.
I only have to stay focus and remember there is only one master that I am serving and that is God alone.
