When it comes to food, there have been studies on nutrition so we sort of know because of this. However, when it comes to the word of God, how do we know? Well, allow me to share my experience.
For some time, I have been reading the daily mass readings. I rush through them, I dream through them and in some instances sleep through them. There were some days when I remember the words and recount them, from drawing strength from them to feeling peace and joy in the reassuring words of scriptures to have the word guide and correct me.
Recently, I missed my morning alarms and woke right into my hectic mornings. I started to put off reading the scriptures and thought nothing of it. Then I found myself feeling upset, grumpy, restless, and impatient and I just knew that I was missing something integral in my day. So I stopped and flipped the pages of scriptures and my demeanour changed as if I found my place to rest.
Although I was not very surprised by this revelation, I felt that God was reminding me to stay close to Him and rest in His word. It is also a reassurance to me that if I walked away from reading His word daily, I am choosing to deny myself the nourishment I need. As the scriptures says, "Man shall not live on bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God" - Matthew 4:4.
